The casino
Opened in the 1860s, the casino’s Belle Époque building also contains the Salle Garnier opera house, designed by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opéra. Its gilded gaming rooms are a sight in themselves, and visitors can tour parts of the building during the day.
Where to stay
The Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo sits directly opposite the casino on the same square, making it the classic casino hotel stay. Plenty of other hotels are within walking distance in Monte-Carlo’s compact centre.
Beyond the tables
Walk the harbour and the old town of Monaco-Ville, visit the Oceanographic Museum, or take the coastal train to Nice and Menton for the day.
Getting there
Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is the nearest airport, around 30–45 minutes by road. Regular trains run along the coast from Nice to Monaco station.
