The casino

During the Second World War, Estoril was a meeting point for exiles and spies. Ian Fleming stayed nearby in 1941, and his time here fed into his first Bond novel, Casino Royale. Today the casino combines gaming with shows, restaurants and an art gallery.

Where to stay

The Palácio Estoril Hotel, opened in 1930 beside the casino gardens, is the classic stay: Fleming signed its guest register, and it later appeared in the Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Beyond the tables

Walk the seaside promenade to Cascais, play one of the area’s golf courses, or take the train into Lisbon for the day.

Getting there

Estoril is about 18 km from Lisbon. Trains run regularly along the coast from Lisbon’s Cais do Sodré station, and Lisbon Airport is around 30–40 minutes by car.

Good to know: Guests must be 18+ with photo ID. Dress is smart casual in most areas. Opening hours, entry fees and dress codes can change, so check the casino’s official website before you travel.
